The 2025 Massachusetts Prostate Cancer Symposium — leading prostate cancer specialists provide up-to-date information on the latest in prostate cancer diagnosis, treatment and research. MPCC is pleased to announce the 2025 Symposium program and provide a link to register for this virtual event.
8:30 AM - Welcome, Greetings, and Overview
The Master of Ceremonies for the symposium is Jordan Rich, MPCC board member and host of the MPCC podcast series “Prostate Cancer & You.”
8:35 AM - New Treatments for Localized and Metastatic Prostate Cancer
Join this session focused on new treatments for localized and metastatic prostate cancer. Descriptions of treatments and responses to audience questions will be included. Presenters are Alexander P. Cole, MD and Sophia Kamran, MD.
Alexander P. Cole, MD is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, Associate Surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and Junior Core Faculty at the Center for Surgery and Public Health. He received his BA at Harvard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts and his MD at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. In addition to his residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, he completed fellowships in urologic oncology (at BWH/DFCI) and image guided therapeutics/focal therapy (University College London).
Sophia Kamran, MD, is a radiation oncologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center and Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology at Harvard Medical School. She is also an Associate Member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Her research has received multiple distinctions both locally and nationally. Recently, she received a 2021 Young Investigator Award from the Prostate Cancer Foundation to explore tumor-immune dynamics and radiation response in oligometastatic prostate cancer. In her clinic, she specializes in the treatment of genitourinary cancers. Dr. Kamran is a member of the MPCC Medical Advisory Committee.
9:20 AM - Myths and Realities of Clinical Trials
In this interview, Dr. David Einstein will discuss and answer questions on “Myths and Realities of Clinical Trails,” including genetic testing. An assistant professor of medicine and an academic medical oncologist at Beth Israel Medical Center, he specializes in genitourinary cancers. His research interests include immunotherapy for genitourinary malignancies, targeted agents for prostate cancer, and translational studies of biomarkers and drug resistance in prostate cancer.
10:00 AM - Prostate Cancer: A Family Affair
This panel will discuss how a prostate cancer diagnosis impacts the entire family system and as quality-of-life issues.
Panelists are:
Fran and Gary Halvorsen are the recipients of the 2023 Charles Austin Award for their dedication over many years to raising awareness of the risks of prostate cancer and the benefit of early detection and treatment options.
Both Fran and Gary lead support groups for men and women through Boston Prostate Cancer Support Group.
Landi Maduro, whose father was diagnosed with prostate cancer while she was making her 2017 documentary, The Silent Killer: Prostate Cancer in the African American Community. CEO of the production company Bluechild Entertainment and founder and president of Women of Color Filmmakers, a 501c3 nonprofit, Landi has produced, written, and directed various industrials, small business commercials, music videos, online courses, shorts, virtual live broadcasts, and films. She joined the MPCC board in 2024.
10:40 AM - Keynote Presentation
Joining us as the 2025 keynote is Dr. Jean V. Joseph from the University of Rochester Medical Center. Dr. Joseph is W.W. Scott Professor and chairman of the department of urology and is professor of oncology at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He specializes in robotic surgery for urologic diseases, particularly prostate cancer. His research interests have focused on surgical innovation, applications of novel robotic technology, simulation, and patient outcomes.
